The all-new 2016 Volvo XC90 SUV with all-wheel drive delivers 20 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway, for a combined fuel-economy rating of 22 mpg, according to the EPA.

The new fuel economy numbers reflect a 25 percent increase in city fuel economy and a 9 percent increase in highway fuel economy over the previous 2014 Volvo XC90.

The official fuel economy numbers were posted this week. The EPA estimates the annual fuel cost of the XC90 at $1,900.

In comparison, the previous 2014 Volvo XC90 AWD delivers 16 mpg in city driving and 23 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.

Every 2016 Volvo XC90 will initially come with all-wheel drive.

The base 2016 XC90 T6 AWD model is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo- and supercharged inline-4 engine coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The base 2014 XC90 is equipped with a 3.2-liter V6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission.

An April 7 update from the U.S. Energy Information Administration says regular gas prices are forecast to average $2.45 a gallon this summer compared to $3.59 a gallon last summer. The average U.S. household is expected to spend about $700 less on gasoline in 2015 compared with 2014.

The XC90 is on sale now at Volvo dealerships.

Key competitors to the XC90 include the Acura MDX, BMW X5 and Infiniti QX60.
